This 5,000 square foot addition to the Central Fire Station in Forney, Texas provides facilities enabling the Fire Department to transition from part-time and volunteer personnel to a full-time professional staff accommodated on-site for 24/7 service. Sharing an urban site with the Public Works Department required a compact two-story design in close proximity to adjacent streets, with new and existing facilities carefully interconnected. The second floor dormitory provides living quarters for a captain and eight fire fighters with lockers to accommodate three shifts. The first floor includes offices for the Chief and two assistants, and a training room which seats thirty. Existing administration and commons areas were remodeled with new finishes, and to meet requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Freeman-Millican worked closely with the client to design two new kennels detached from, but with easy access to, existing customer and staff areas. In addition to food preparation and storage areas, the kennels include forty individual pens, each consisting of indoor and outdoor compartments separated by sliding gates which are operable from outside the pens, enabling the dogs to be isolated from staff while the facilities are cleaned. On the interior, dogs can be brought in during inclement weather, and their food is sheltered from insects and rodents. The entire facility is built on sloped floors with drains in each pen for sanitary purposes and ease of cleaning. Each kennel is surrounded by driveways enabling staff to easily transfer dogs from vehicles directly into their pens. Customers can easily view the dogs from outside the kennel, and the dogs have access to fresh air and natural light.
